Cornwall Hearth Tax
Bridgerule Parish
The Cornwall Hearth Tax shown here was taken Michaelmas 1664. However, it also provides information on the 1662M return due to the way it was collected.The collectors were instructed to use the 1662M return as a basis for comparison. Therefore, when the number of hearths was the same as the previous return, 'ex' (for examinatur) was written. If the number of hearths differed, a reason was given. Frequently the collectors noted a decrease in hearths and gave the reason 'returned too many by mistake.'
